Why accessibility
Blended learning methodologies, including the use of web-based technologies, are increasingly being incorporated into learning and assessment activities by the Institute of TAFE Tasmania's delivery teams.
However, as the advantages of the new learning technologies are experienced by the majority, for some other groups, issues of access and equity are exacerbated.
The overarching objective of the project was to explore accessibility aspects of using the web and other electronic media in the VET context and to consider both the broader and more specific aspects of inclusive practices as a means of opening up the almost infinite potential of the web to such groups.
Thus, the project was about "accessibility", but also about "inclusivity". It is not just about "accommodating" students with special learning needs, it is about "including" them in the learning experiences.
A basic premise for this project was that, if planning for learners with disabilities occurs as a front end rather than back end process, all learners would be advantaged in the long run. And life will certainly be easier for teachers who are regularly faced with the challenge of having to frantically revamp their resources to "accommodate" yet another learner with different needs.
